Ned Schwing stated in his reference guide about the Model 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started proof marking them in 1908… I don't know if which is correct, but will presume that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was used once the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and finished. This is highly obvious on the firearms created from the late teenagers through early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off once the evidence was struck over the receiver body.
